The Kendama sport originates from Japan and is a skill game that is increasingly played in Europe. You can catch the ball in various ways on the holder. Many tricks are possible. In Japan, the hammer is called 'Ken,' and the ball is the 'Dama.'
The ball can be caught in various ways. There are three cups, one underneath and two on the sides. You can also catch the ball on the spike and between the cups and the spike. Additionally, you can catch the holder on the ball.
To play with a Kendama, one holds the toy and pulls the ball up so that it can be caught in the cups or land with the hole on the spike. More advanced tricks include balancing tricks, juggling, and various catches. There are eleven prescribed moves on the kendama trick list to achieve a kyu ranking and several more for a dan ranking. A 10-kyu rating (the lowest beginner class) is achieved by simply catching the ball in the largest cup. A book published by the Japanese Kendama Association lists 101 different tricks, and there are presumably tens of thousands of trick variations possible.
While most people play with Kendamas for fun, there are also competitions. These are usually held in Japan and North America. Participation in such competitions involves performing a list of tricks consecutively or repeating a specific trick for as long as possible. Additionally, tricks can be performed with an opponent, and the one who fails is out.
